Chapter Sixteen

I found a pay phone on the side of the building, fed a coin in, and dialed Masters and O’Reilly. Miriam Malloy answered with her usual greeting, then turned curt when I asked to speak with Chet.

“I’ll see if he’s available,” she said. “He’s very busy this afternoon.”

I bit my tongue, cutting off a snippy reply. “Thank you.”

I waited a moment, and then Chet came on the line.

“Are you busy, or can you fit me in?” I asked after we greeted each other.

“Was Miriam hassling you?” he said. “Did she tell you I was busy?” He let out a put-upon sigh. “She thinks she knows what’s best for me. Anyway, I’ve always got time for you, old boy. You run into a problem with your case?”

“I’ve got some pictures I want you to look at.”

“Oh, sounds intriguing. Come on over.”

“I’ll be there in fifteen minutes.”

I hung up, went back to my car, and drove downtown.
